What to expect from counselling

Making the decision to attend counselling is a great first step in acknowledging that you would like something to change.

It can offer support beyond that available from family or friends. It offers an environment in which you can express your feelings and gain deeper insight into your difficulties. Counselling sessions are also confidential, so you can talk about things you might not feel comfortable discussing with anyone else.

The aim is to help you find better ways to understand yourself, or to bring about changes to help you manage the way you think or behave to improve your mental and emotional well-being.

I provide counselling for individuals and couples on a short or long-term basis.  This means you may either engage in counselling for as long as you require or choose to be allocated a set amount of solution-focused sessions with specific goals in mind.

Assessment Session

A session lasts for 55 minutes.  During this time I will ask certain questions about you and your life and we can decide together if we think we’re a good fit for each other. Before attending this first assessment session, it may be helpful to prepare by writing down your reasons for seeking help.  This will make describing your feeling more comfortable.

Identifying what you hope to gain from counselling helps to give your something to work towards in future sessions.

We will either both agree for counselling to continue, either on a short- or longer-term basis or decide that no further appointments are needed. This may be because you got what you wanted from the consultation, or because we decided other ways of resolving your problem would be the best option.

Working through the details of a problem can be very useful, as it can recall the small things that tend to keep your problem in place. Later, these details will help you to resolve the problem.

I work with a range of issues including anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, relationship issues, depression, rejection; and the universal longing within humanity ‘the quest for love and connection’.

In addition, I also cover generational differences, divorce and separation, bullying, career, bereavement, depression, lack of confidence and low self-esteem, childhood issues and more.

I see many come through counselling and undergo transformation, healing and leave with hope for the future.

I don’t just sit, listen and nod my head, I enter your world.

‘Somewhere between right and wrong, there is a garden, I’ll meet you there.’ – Rumi

No matter your challenge, as a ‘Person Centred Counsellor’ I will work with you as an individual in helping you to explore, grow and express finding your true organismic self; You are the vessel and therapy is the journey to help you unravel the narrative of your inner heart and you are valued. There is a treasure within the soul and together we will explore it.

I am concerned and committed to the healing, well-being and development of you as a whole person: body, mind and spirit. I offer a space that is non-threatening and non-judgmental, where a new expression of who you truly are can begin to emerge, it is a space to re-imagine your life and future; a way to examine and work through issues you may have so that genuine healing and change can occur.

Talking with friends and family is invaluable, but sometimes it might feel too risky and impersonal to expose them to your inner thoughts and feelings.

This is when having your own private space to express and explore what you are experiencing may become helpful and attractive to you; That’s where I come in as a personal counsellor and psychotherapist.

I am here to guide you through this process without rescue; Working in a collaborative way to meet you at you’re point in your life’s journey. ‘Together we explore’ feelings, thought patterns, expectations of who we think we are, attitudes and our interaction with our inner and outer world – so in counselling together, we can begin to see with clarity, thus enabling growth and actualisation to happen.

As a trained psychotherapist counsellor; qualified at ‘Middlesex University and a member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapists) in addition I have also been in the education profession for over 16 years, working with young adults as well as SEN clients and during this time made the transition from learning and behaviour mentor to embark on a full-time counselling career.

My approach is based on Nobel peace prize nominee Carl Rogers’ – 1902-1987 humanistic theories working with you at you’re pace, therapy is the journey to help you un-render and unravel the emotions within.

With my passion to help you discover and understand self in both past and present, using early childhood experience, cultural beliefs, gender restraints or present-day life on this blue planet that shapes patterns of relating and sense of self; (humanistic, Existential and Phenomenological).

Over the years I have gained the trust and a good reputation of my education community and team and I still endeavour to learn and grow as a counsellor as I explore the inner thoughts and feelings of each client through the core conditions and my practice thereof. Empathy (sharing and understanding feelings), congruence (being genuine and open to your experiences) and unconditional positive regard (fully accepting you for what you bring, and who you are), are the key things that help give clients the right conditions for personal discovery and growth.

I have worked with hundreds of individuals from all types of backgrounds throughout the world.

I have found that when clients have their own private space to express and explore what the in-congruence is within that they are experiencing, counselling becomes beneficial if not crucial in exploring the world within. Arrange an appointment today.
